Adoption Center

Serving Pet Owners Across the nation

The NLOL Pet Adoption Center is the longest-standing operation of the NLOL family. Our mission to establish permanent adoption of abandoned cats and dogs is achieved through this facet of our overall mission, as we provide shelter, food, basic medical care and training to each rescued animal. It is not unusual for us to find animals left overnight in crates or chained to trees in front of our building. Last year we were able to touch the lives of over 1,300 companion animals that, through no choice or fault of their own, were in need of our care.

Responding to daily phone calls, we acknowledge the limited resources available to many community members who can no longer care for their dog or cat. The NLOL Adoption Center is typically one of the only alternatives for those seeking a safe-haven for their animal.

Your support makes saving them possible.

Adoption Center Policies

  • Appointments are available between 1pm and 5pm Tuesday-Saturday and are scheduled in 30 minute increments.
  • Anyone that arrives early, before their time slot, will need to wait in their vehicle until their scheduled appointment time.
  • Walk up guests that do not have an appointment will be given an appointment time. They can choose to wait in their vehicle or come back to the Adoption Center at their appointment time.

We have transitioned to operating by appointment only, as we’ve found it less stressful for the dogs and provides a better experience for potential adopters. With appointment times, we can better prepare each dog to meet a new potential adopter and help set everyone up for success.

If you have an appointment but aren’t sure who you’d like to meet, we have an adoption book in the lobby that has pics and bios of all our available dogs. You can look through the book and let us know who you’d like to meet.

We encourage all potential adopters to call or email and let our staff know what personality, age range, and activity level you are looking for in a new dog, as our staff do a fantastic job of match making.

Pantry program is still available. After participant checks in with staff, they will need to return to their vehicle and staff will bring their pet food out to their vehicle.

Anyone that is at risk but needs to come to our Adoption Center for services, please check in at our lobby and let us know what you need and we will bring info, food, etc. out to the vehicle.

Many People Treat Pets as Commodities

The excuses for abandonment range from behavior problems, allergies and lack of time or resources, to simply that the animal no longer suits their lifestyle. Through this heart-breaking process, we recognize that we, too, are limited in the resources that we have to care for the thousands of neglected or abandoned animals in our community.

In January of 2009, we evaluated our current practices and found that with the help of our generous Angel Fund donors, we could employ low-cost methods to reach our goal of being a “No-Kill” shelter. We were able to enlist a veterinarian to evaluate the medical status and needs of these animals. We also adjusted our medical protocols and created an extensive medication oversight procedure, which enables us to address medical issues that have historically been beyond our capabilities.

With pet food donations from community members, we are able to assist individuals who are unable to afford food for their animals. Through these outreach efforts, we are proud to have an adoption rate of 95 percent, well exceeding the national adoption figures of only 40 percent.

An application for the adoption of one of our cats or dogs may be found under the Forms section of our website.
